What does it mean to have a different hair type and why is Afro hair not always accepted? Millions of people of African descent have Afros, braids, bantus, kinks, coils, curls, dreads, fades, microlocs and twists to express their Afro hair. Yet many in the world do not accept “the norm of African people, with African hair” but in 2025 we believe it’s time to show up with our natural textures and captivating coifs.
Education is a great way to build bridges and closer community ties so we hope that the Guinness World Record for the “largest cultural awareness lesson in 24 hours” will take you on an experience of discovery and learning about Afro hair and its significance.
- You can take the lesson alone or take it with others but logon individually.
- Introduce the lesson to your workplace, church or community group.
- Take the lesson with your kids and family and have a discussion afterwards.
- Meet with friends and compare experiences
- Share your reactions and follow @worldafroday socials to keep track of people around the world.
If the attempt is successful, individual certificates will be available from Guinness World Records directly.
Any age can take part in the Guinness World Record attempt for the Largest Cultural Awareness Lesson in 24 hours – The Big WAD Lesson is about Afro hair, culture, history and law. We hope that this is an opportunity to unite people from around the world and learn to embrace our differences; creating more cohesive workplaces, schools and communities.
